This Summer at OBC
This Summer at OBC
We are one week into August, and it’s an appropriate time to give an overview of what’s happening in church life this summer.
Summer Sermon Series
When summer arrives, it has become part of our annual rhythm at OBC to preach from Psalms or Proverbs. This year we decided to preach through the psalms of the Sons of Korah (Ps 42-49). This series of psalms begins with lament (Ps 42-44), followed by a look to God’s covenant and kingdom (Ps 45-46, and concluding with songs of Zion (Ps 47-49). Thematically, these psalms point to the King who will bring an end to lament and bring joy to God’s people at Zion. We encourage you to read these Psalms in preparation for worship each week. Pray that this summer in the Psalms will turn our eyes to Christ our King!

Ministry Slow Down & Sunday School Pause
Our Men’s Bible reading groups are wrapping up with the Gospel of Mark, our Women’s Ministry’s summer study in Romans has concluded, and our Youth Group Bible studies in 2 Peter will also be finishing in the next few days. We are thankful for this time of fellowship in the Word, and we look forward to when our ministries will restart in September.
When we reach the month of August, it is also one of our summer rhythms to pause Sunday School for the month to allow for a period of rest, while also creating a window of opportunity for facility projects and ministry training.
Building Renovation
This week and next, we are undergoing building renovation as the flooring upstairs is replaced. Thank you to everyone who has helped to prepare for this significant undertaking, and for the many hands who helped move furniture this past Sunday. As I write this post, work crews are installing vinyl plank flooring in the hallways and offices. Next week, carpet tile will be installed in the sanctuary, and new carpet will be installed in the upstairs children’s classrooms.
As there are many moving pieces and the upstairs will be in disarray, the next two weeks will be unique for us. We will be holding services downstairs in the Gathering Place this Sunday, 8/11, and next Sunday, 8/18. Nursery and Busy Bees will be located in Room 4 downstairs. These temporary changes with our summer renovation is an opportunity for us to serve one another and patiently extend grace as we work through this project.
We continue to have many opportunities where help is needed as we shift furniture around the building. If you can help serve in this way, please let us know with an RSVP here.
If you would be interested in serving on an ongoing basis with our Maintenance Ministry as they care for our building and grounds, please contact Pastor Ben.
Ministry Training (8/18 & 8/25)
Ministry training for the children’s ministry will be held on Sunday, 8/18 and Sunday, 8/25. This training will be held downstairs in the Gathering Place, beginning at 9:00am. This training for servants in children's and youth ministry, plus anyone who would like to learn more about those ministries.
Stewarding the gift of OBC's kids should be a major focus for the whole church. Children are a blessing and heritage from the Lord that we are to raise up and send out for His kingdom (Ps 127:3-5). We want to raise up the next generation to know the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders he has done (Ps 78:4). One way we can excel in this, no matter our age or stage of life, is to come alongside OBC's parents by serving in children's or youth ministry.
We will cover our overall goals in children's and youth ministry, some aspects of our Child Safeguarding Policy (you can find it here), and some broader safety and security topics, with time for discussion and questions.
We pray that this summer would be a time of growth in grace for you and your family, and we look forward to worshipping our Lord with you this Sunday.
Blessings in Christ,
The Elders of Occoquan Bible Church
