A Call to Prayer and Fasting this Election Day
A Call for a Day of Prayer and Fasting
Election Day, November 3, 2026
As early voting continues and we approach Election Day (Nov 3), we must recognize that consequential issues are at stake for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Should the anti-Christian amendments that have been proposed be ratified, more pre-born children will be destroyed in the womb, God’s institution of marriage will be defaced in law, and the deception of transgender ideology will be enshrined in our constitution. We are deeply concerned by the great harms that will come upon our Commonwealth should these amendments be ratified. To stand against this unrighteousness, let us seek to prevent our state’s highest governing document from being grossly disfigured to become an instrument of wickedness.
Here are four ways we can respond.
1. Vote
We call upon every voter to oppose these amendments to protect pre-born children, to defend the institution of marriage, and to stand against the destruction of transgender ideology. God created mankind as male and female as a part of God’s good and perfect creation (Gen 1:27). God creates life in the womb, and every child is a blessing (Ps 127, 139). God created the institution of marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman which is to be a portrait of Christ’s love for the church (Eph 5:32). Instead of defacing marriage, we must honor it (Heb 13:4).
God spoke through the prophet Zechariah, commanding his people to “Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace” (Zech 8:16). The act of voting in elections is an act of judgment that the citizens of Virginia make together. We must make judgments that are right and true, and we must not abdicate this task to the ungodly. Educate yourself about what is on your ballot and cast your vote in righteousness.
2. Register to Vote
If you are a Virginia citizen and have not yet registered to vote, take action to register to vote. If it is too late to register in advance, you can also register to vote at your polling place on Election Day and cast a provisional ballot.
3. Talk to Your Friends and Neighbors
Let us proclaim the truth about God’s good design for human flourishing. God’s good gift of marriage to a man and a woman brings about a new family, which is the divinely ordered place for new image bearers who are immutably male or female to be given life in the womb. We encourage you to share the letter from Virginia’s pastors that we published online (virginiapastors.org), and to speak the truth to those around you as Election Day approaches. Talking about these things also presents an opportunity to share the good news to which every marriage points, that Christ has come to save his bride, and there is forgiveness and new life for all who trust in his death and resurrection.
4. Pray and Fast
Join us in a day of prayer and fasting for the Commonwealth of Virginia this Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Biblical fasting is not the mere skipping of meals, but it includes soul searching and humble repentance that is joined to set apart times of prayer. Meals that have been set aside are replaced with prayer. Fasting and prayer without obedience is condemned in Scripture (Isa 58:1-12). Likewise, the one who labors without prayerful dependence upon the Lord should expect a fruitless return (John 15:1-5). The Scriptures give multiple examples of those who earnestly sought the Lord’s intervention with prayer and fasting at critical times in Israel’s history (Ezra 9:5, Neh 1:4, Esther 4:3, Dan 9:3).
We know that the Lord’s blessing is on those who come to him in repentance and faith. He delights to lift up the humble and he casts down the proud. The heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord (Prov 21:1), and this reality extends to every creature. So let us fast and pray that the God would have mercy on the state of Virginia.

Five Points of Guidance for Fasting
- Fasting must be voluntary and for the right reasons. Those who choose to fast do so freely. It should be a willful choice for every family member that participates.
- Fasting is not right for everyone. Little ones and those with medical conditions that would be negatively impacted should not fast. Some should consult a doctor before fasting. For those who cannot fast, they can still set apart time in prayer
- Fasting does not look the same for every person. There are variations on scale that may need to be adapted for each person. Some will fast for one meal, others will fast from all food from sunrise to sundown, and others will fast from all food for a 24-hour period.
- Remember to stay hydrated. Fasting should never include dehydration.
- Educate yourself on fasting by reading medical articles. Should fasting bring about the onset of any troubling health symptoms, exercise wisdom and conclude fasting early.

A Prayer Guide for the 2026 Election
- Pray that God would intervene in this election and turn voter’s hearts to make righteous judgments when they cast their ballots (Zech 8:16).
- Pray for the defeat of Amendment 1 and for the end of abortion in Virginia and in our nation. Pray that preborn children would be saved from death (Prov 24:11).
- Pray for the defeat of Amendment 2, that marriage would be honored (Heb 13:4). Pray for the restoration of a biblical understanding of marriage in Virginia, and that marriages would display Christ’s love for the church (Eph 5:32).
- Pray that transgender ideology would be defeated in Amendments 1-2, and for a restoration of the truth that God has created image bearers who are immutably male and female (Gen 1:27).
- Pray for the election of officials who fear God (Prov 1:7) and that the political campaigns of the unrighteous would fail.
- Pray that churches would engage the state of Virginia with God’s Word and that they would be bold for gospel and for Christ as King over all of areas of life.
- Pray for those who are elected that they would serve God for the good of the people and wield justice to rightly punish evildoers (Rom 13:1-4).
- Pray for light of the Gospel to shine brightly in the state of Virginia and that God would grant revival and mercifully bring those who are dead in their sins to new life in Christ (Eph 2:1-7).
- Pray for Occoquan Bible Church, that the Lord would give us wisdom and boldness in the ministry of the Gospel here in Northern Virginia.
- Pray for Christians to be faithful as salt and light (Matt 5:13-16) and as ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor 5:20).
- Should Amendments 1-2 be ratified, pray for the court cases that have been filed to overturn those amendments on the basis of the Virginia General Assembly’s procedural violations in the constitutional amendment process.
- Pray that the church would be sanctified and become increasingly faithful to Christ regardless of the election results (John 17:17; Eph 5:23–27).
